Saint Joseph may be the holiest man on earth because God chose him to be the foster father of His only Son. Joseph showed obedience in fulfilling his vocation through his entire life. He lived selflessly and dedicated his life to Jesus and Mary. He teaches us to live out our vocation by setting the examples of goodness, obedience and selflessness.

Saint Joseph teaches us how to live out our vocation through his goodness. We know Saint Joseph was good, because it says in the bible he was a “righteous man.” From the moment the Angel revealed God’s plan for him in a dream till his death, he perfectly lived out his vocation, setting a good example for us. An example of his goodness is when Our Lady was found with child and he wanted to divorce her quietly instead of punishing her as an adulteress which was his right per the law. He also showed goodness to her by loving and caring for her and her son’s material as well as their spiritual needs. He worked as a carpenter, taught Jesus his trade, and made sure the Holy Family followed the Jewish customs. He also showed Goodness to God by obedience.

Saint Joseph obediently lived out his vocation until his death. Obedience is needed in fulfilling one’s vocation because only by obedience to God can we fulfill our purpose in life. Saint Joseph sets the example of not only obedience to God’s laws, but to man’s laws as well. He was obedient to man’s laws when the law of the census was put into place. He took Mary, even though she was pregnant, to Bethlehem. He was obedient and followed God’s will, even if he didn't fully understand it. Such as when he was given the warning from God in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus. This act of obedience to God must also have taken a certain level of selflessness.

Saint Joseph showed selflessness, by putting Our Lord and Our Lady first, particularly when he took Mary into his home when she was pregnant with the Son of God. He selflessly gave up the life he could have had as an ordinary husband. He provided for them physically through his work as a carpenter, and spiritually by ensuring that they met all the requirements of the Jewish laws. Saint Joseph teaches us that in order to follow our vocation we must be selfless and ready to follow God’s will.

Saint Joseph teaches us the importance of living out our vocation, because he knows that what Our Lord has planned is beautiful and leads us to the wonders that follow. We should follow his example in living out our vocations through being good, obeying God, and selflessness. This would please the angels and saints and in heaven and get us one step closer to joining them.
