Mary Mother of the Church
One of the most sacred roles in all of humanity is that of a mother. This role, that of loving and forming a child for God, was most perfectly exercised by Mary. She fulfilled her position of Mother to the Messiah all throughout Christ’s life, strengthening Him and helping Him to carry out His Father’s divine plan. When Christ died, He gave her to the Church, to guide us with that sweet and tender motherly love, so that we may more easily come to know Him and His will for us.
Chosen by God, Mary is the mother of the Christ. She guided Him through His earthly life and with great sorrow watched Him give Himself up as a perfect sacrifice on the cross. Moments before His death and amid pain, He gave Mary, His beloved Mother, to be the mother of His Church and His disciples. She is the Immaculate Conception, free from sin and full of grace. Her grace envelops us, her earthly children, in the most tender and devoted care. This most beautiful motherly guardianship is based in the perfect love between this mother and her Son. Her nurturing devotion to her divine Son and Redeemer extends to us, His Mystical Body.
Today, Catholics see Mary as the mediatrix of grace between Christ and His Church. Interceding for us with her love and bringing our prayers to her Son, Mary is the ideal of motherhood. She guides the Church on Earth to follow closely the footsteps of Jesus and His disciples, teaching us the way to her Son. As Mother of the Church, her grace is vital, and her love, graces, and guidance, enable us to have an intimate relationship with Christ. She brought Christ into the world, and now brings Him to us. By setting an example of perfect love, obedience, and devotion to her Savior, she demonstrates to us how to grow close to Jesus, and thus to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Mary plays a central role in the Church and in our lives. She wraps us in her mantle of motherly love and nurturing care, giving us a model of perfect devotion and love of Christ. Filled with divine graces ever since the moment of her conception, she is here to guide us on the path to heaven. She pours down her blessings upon us and helps to bring Christ into our lives, so we may know, love, and serve Him as she did. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
