Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise McGraw is from the MODG 6th Grade Social Studies Syllabus.

Ask any MODG graduate, and they will always remember Mara, Daughter of the Nile as one of their favorites. The story is set in Ancient Egypt and tells of a beautiful slave girl who seeks freedom through her ability to read and write. She ends up playing the role of double spy for two arch enemies, Queen Hatsheput and Thutmose III.

Through the intrigue of danger and romance, the student is drawn into the richly depicted Egyptian culture and the historic rivalry between the Hatsheput and Thutmose. There are few books in the program that bring ancient Egyptian culture to life so vividly as this one. Students will also learn from Mara that, despite being clever, a life of deceit is a dangerous game and can only result in harm to yourself and to those you love.

If you have a student that finds history books “boring,”Mara, Daughter of the Nile is sure to change their mind!
