Madeleine Takes Command by Ethel C. Brill is from the MODG 4th Grade Social Studies Syllabus.

Knowing that our country needs strong heroines, I highly recommend the book Madeleine Takes Command by Ethel C. Brill. Set in New France in the late 1600s, the book tells the true story of Madeleine de Vercheres and a small band of unlikely helpers, who held off a week-long attack of the Iroquois Indians. When her mother leaves with part of the family to attend to some important business, Madeleine promises to look after her two younger brothers and the family fort, called a seigneury. After a surprise Indian ambush that left the fort mostly undefended, fourteen year old Madeleine steps up with perseverance, courage and ingenuity as she assumes command of the fort and works to fight off the attack. This book would make fabulous read-aloud and should be on everyone's book shelf.
