“But there are four things that stand out to me. You have to have a reasonable structure in your homeschool. You have to be willing to teach what needs to be taught. You have to give them reasons for what you ask them to do, especially as they get older. But the bottom line is, you have to have their hearts.”- Laura Berquist
Laura gave a wonderful talk this month for our Conversations w/Laura Parent Panel class! Thank you to everyone who joined us. We are so grateful to our wonderful panelists for taking the time to share their thoughts with our community.
Laura’s talk focused on explaining the goals of education at each stage of learning. She broke down the signs students typically show as they develop skills and become ready to move toward the next stage’s objectives. Understanding these educational goals is helpful and important for parents, as it allows them to better support their children’s success and focus on what matters most at each stage. As Laura states, “We need to be clear about the ends we are working towards.”
For reference here is a link to the Curriculum Adjustment Examples that Laura mentions.
Our panelists gave wonderful insights and examples for prioritizing and giving yourself grace as a homeschool parent. They cautioned against adopting a “check-the-box” mindset and encouraged families to truly embrace both the curriculum and the formation we are offering our children. Homeschooling, they emphasized, is not about perfection or “having it all,” but about continual effort and faithful perseverance.
