We use Cambridge Latin Course - Unit 1(Fourth Edition) which gives the student a solid introduction to Latin. The text introduces vocabulary in each stage along with practice of the language through mastery of the declensions, conjugations, and grammatical rules. The text also has a variety of passages in each stage for the student to translate that will provide the student with sufficient practice to master the new material. The text also includes excellent information on the Roman life, culture, and history. There is an accompanying Workbook which provides additional practice and a Teacher's Manual which provides answers to the workbook exercises and the translations in the text. The Intro to Latin Syllabus has a day-by-day breakdown of this course along with quizzes, tests, answers to the quizzes and tests and a variety of teaching resources including Eighth and Ninth Grade Learning Objectives, and grading charts. This is a 1 year, 1 credit course.

Stage 1

Vocabulary–Start by reviewing your new vocabulary. The words that are important for you to memorize in this chapter can be found on page 18. Use the vocabulary page (found at the back of this syllabus) to learn your vocabulary. Follow instructions carefully!

Exercises– Translate the sentences on pages 2-6. This is not an exercise on which you will be graded, so look up words if you don’t know them. (There is a vocabulary index in the back of the book, page 243.)

New Concepts– Go over pages 8-9 with your teacher carefully. This is important. Make sure that you understand the concepts presented in these pages. Do not go on in the chapter until you are sure that you understand the concepts presented.

Exercises– Today you will start your Omnibus Workbook. Do exercises 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6.

Vocabulary–Review all words.

Exercises– Read pages 10-16 in your text carefully. Do the “Word Study”, which is on p. 17 in your text. Then do exercises 1.4, 1.5, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10 in your workbook.

Vocabulary– Ask your teacher to give you an oral quiz on your vocabulary words. Review your words if you find you need to.

Graded Work– Turn in your written translation of “Cerberus” and the workbook exercises done to date for your teacher to grade.
